Becoming an Outdoor Woman > 2008 Courses
BECOMING AN OUTDOOR WOMAN
Fish & Game NZ run a unique course, teaching women the skills involved in game bird hunting and trout fishing called Becoming an Outdoor Woman in NZ (BOW). The next course will be on the 29th and 30th March 2008 at the Northern Wairoa Gun Club, and the Kai Iwi Lakes.
If you are a woman who has ever hankered after becoming an adept hunter or trout fisher, wanted to cook your catch into a delicious meal in the wild, or to know more about the ecology of our bush and wetland then ‘Becoming an Outdoor Woman’ may be just the stimulus you need. Many women have partners, relatives or friends who fish and hunt, usually male, but have never had the opportunity to try these sports in a non-competitive situation aimed at new comers. This is quite an intense course, but we always make sure it’s fun and relaxing as well.
‘Becoming an Outdoor Woman in NZ’ is a women-only weekend event being run by Fish & Game NZ to give women a taste of the skills needed to trout fish and game bird hunt. The course is limited to 20 participants.
Modelled on a very successful programme taught in 33 US states as well as Canada (taking approx 45.000 women through the programme to date), women are taught in small groups in a cooperative, non-competitive way with ample time for one-on-one coaching.
Professor Christine Thomas who began the course in the US says: “Confidence is one of the greatest results of this programme. You just have to go on one weekend and you feel pretty good. It’s wonderful to see how women change as their skills sharpen and confidence in themselves grows.”
Saturday 29th March – teaches game bird hunting, firearms safety and clay target shooting at the Northern Wairoa Gun Club (Dargaville). In the afternoon there will be a presentation on Northland Fish & Game wetlands and more clay target shooting.
Sunday 30th March – Trout fishing at Kai Iwi Lakes. Tackle, gear and skills are demonstrated for each type of fly fishing – dry and wet fly, nymph and lure – along with coaching in casting and fly tying. Some trolling will also be available. The Kai Iwi Lakes are 35 kilometres North west of Dargaville on the road to Waipoua Forest.
Lunch and refreshments is provided each day. All equipment is provided and participants will be given a map for the weekend’s course venues.
The course fee of $200.00 covers all its costs, excluding transport and accommodation.
Accommodation is available at motels and hotels in Dargaville but if you want to camp in a tent then a camp ground is also available at the Kai Iwi Lakes. Participants will need to arrange their own accommodation and meals other than the lunches.
