2009 Fish and Game Elections

Election Day was Tuesday 17 November 2009.

The election was carried out under the full authority and discretion of the Returning Officer pursuant to the Fish and Game Electoral Regulations 1990. A copy of the Fish and Game Electoral Regulations 1990 is available here.

  • The election was carried out by postal and internet voting to approximately 30,000 electors, depending on how many of the twelve regions have contested elections. There are approximately 85,000 eligible fish and game licence holders in New Zealand, of which approximately 30% have indicated that they wish to vote in the elections.
  • The voter packs were lodged at NZ Post on 27 October 2009 for distribution to all electors by 30 October 2009.

Voting closed at 5pm on Tuesday 17 November 2009 for hand delivered voting papers and Thursday 19 November for posted voting papers.

How are results determined?
If after the close of candidacy, there are not enough nominations for an election to take place for a region, those candidates will be declared elected. Each candidate will be advised in writing by the Returning Officer and a public notice will be placed in the appropriate regional daily newspapers on Saturday 28 November.

Where a contested election is held, the council is made up of the highest polling candidate from each of the sub-regions, plus the remaining highest polling of all other candidates necessary to fill the 12 vacancies. Election results for contested regions will be announced by public notice on Saturday 28 November.

Elected members will take office on Wednesday 16 December.
