Didymo
The latest findings from MAF Biosecurity New Zealand’s didymo science programme were presented at a seminar held in Wellington 24 July. For Biosecurity’s media release click here.
Results of field trials of chelated copper control tool confirmed it is a potential control tool for didymo in certain circumstances. Further research is required. Following full analysis and review, it is expected both a release of details of the chelated copper trial, and a decision on further work will be made in August.
The seminar was told that it is clear New Zealand-wide eradication of didymo is not possible based on the work done to date. The best way to control the spread of didymo is for all freshwater users to check, clean and dry their equipment between waterways.
