Auckland/Waikato Fish and Game: July 2008
Bimonthly news brief The Auckland/Waikato news brief, which is published following each bimonthly Council meeting, is now available on the Fish and Game website: http://www.fishandgame.org.nz/Site/Regions/Auckland/fishingNews/NewsbriefJuly08.aspx
Awakino subdivision The Waitomo District Council has approved a subdivision application by Mr & Mrs Barker alongside Gribbons Road in the headwaters of the Awakino River. The subdivision covers the “Gaston Farm”, which was purchased by the Barkers two years ago. The farm has been subdivided into eight lots, but only two will be available for sale, with the intention of the Barkers to retain and continue to farm the remaining eight lots. The two lots to be sold contain native bush (313 and 539ha) and are too steep to be farmed. The district council has agreed to the subdivision with the condition that a 20m wide esplanade reserve is provided alongside the Awakino River. The reserve would provide public access to an extensive length of river. In conjunction with existing reserves about 10km of river will have public access if the subdivision proceeds.

This may be the last time that we release trout into Lake Tomarata. Water quality in Tomarata has declined, most likely due to the illegal release of coarse fish, with water clarity reduced to just 0.5m. Moreover, the decline in water clarity has lead to the total collapse of submerged aquatic weed – so the lake is no longer providing good habitat for trout. No surprise that recent angler returns have not been encouraging. However, if you fish Tomarata and consider that we should continue to stock these waters, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
