Auckland / Waikato > Hunting for BOWs BOWS – go hunting for the first time
Women who have done the BOW course are now being offered the next step of game bird hunting on a Waikato-based shooting pond made especially available to them. Complete with maimai and toilet facilities, the BOW pond is in Fish & Game Auckland/Waikato’s extensive Dean Block just south of Meremere.
The women who take up this offer will have one coach per two women, guns, decoys and punt all supplied free of charge by Fish & Game, but will need to pay $1 a shot and buy either a whole season licence prior to opening weekend on 7 May - cost $72 - or a 24 hour licence – cost $16 – which can be bought after 15 May. “We began the BOW course and are continuing with this next step because we want to see more women take up the sports of game bird hunting and trout fishing.
“But we know that to do this they need to master some more basic skills and gain confidence alongside an experienced hunter and coach,” says Shonagh Lindsay, Public Awareness Advisor, Fish & Game NZ. he BOW course has shown us that outdoors enthusiasm is not lacking in urban or semi-urban women, however the course alone is not sufficient for a novice hunter to then take up the actual sport of gamebird hunting.”
Any woman who has done a BOW course, and is interested in going hunting this season on the BOW pond, should contact the Fish & Game Auckland/Waikato office on 07 849 1666 or phone Shonagh Lindsay on 09 360 5081 or 027 273 0939.
