2008 Regional Canada Goose Trend Count
Mark Webb.

Throughout the South Island, Canada geese are counted on over 280 sites in the six Fish and Game regions in late June every year to monitor goose distribution and population change.

Within the CSI Region counts have been undertaken since 1986 at 66 sites and a further 16 have been added as geese have widened their range.

This year 9,005 geese were counted up from 8,914 last year. A further 1,150 were counted in the supplementary sites, up from 827 last year. Areas with the biggest increases were the upper Rangitata and Ashburton lakes up 1,200 birds to 2,150, and the South Canterbury coastal area up 550 birds to 1,310. Two areas – Mid/South Canterbury rivers and Ohau/Haldon showed declines of about 600 birds each.
