Reserve Access Guide
AWAITI – situated on Greig Road, which runs between West Bank Road & Thornton Road (coast road between Matata & Whakatane). The reserve is sign posted with access gates on the South Eastern end, by an old shed and lean to (white). Access is prohibited down private driveway at Northern end. Large reserve with 17 odd stands with good jump shooting and decoy hunting. Driving around the reserve tracks is prohibited. Awaiti Access Map.
AWAKAPONGA – situated along the main Matata / Edgecumbe road, right beside the true right of the Tarawera River (visible from the road). Two pond areas with average hunting. The reserve is still under development so be wary of contractors that may be working during the season
BREGMANS – situated at the end of Sutherland Road, off Matata Road (SH2). Go through the gate directly as road finishes and drive along stopbank until reaching reserve. Access to the ponds is immediately right along an access track upon reaching the reserve boundary (identified by an old Wildlife Service sign). Do not park along access track as multiple users (eg. drainage engineers). Note F&G only manage the bottom third of the reserve and the ponds are only in this area. LAKE TAMURENUI– situated beside SH30 just west of Onepu, between Braemar Road and Moody Road (opposite side of SH30 though). Enter via unmarked farm gate that borders SH30 surrounded by trees. Vehicle access track only goes part way around reserve so walking is suggested to stands. Pheasants frequent this access track.
ORINI – situated off McLean Road (Western end) which turns off East Bank Road, Edgecumbe. Access is via private farm race where permission for access is compulsory. The access point is the second access driveway on the left (heading West) after crossing over Reids Central Canal. This is a tanker access drive with the cow shed only 50 metres off McLean Road. The race starts between the implement shed and the cow shed and is approximately 1.5km long. Do not speed on this race (ie.<20kph) and wait for stock. At the Northern end of the race (up the hill), turn left and follow track to reserve. Driving around the reserve tracks is prohibited. View Orini Maimai location and Access Details

THORNTON LAGOON – situated at the end of Thornton Hall Road, off Thornton Road (coast road between Matata & Whakatane). Maimais along coast side are accessible via sand dune track, 4WD essential. To access maimais on landward side of lagoon, the track is through a steel gate with a sand track leading to it prior to sighting the lagoon (right side of road). A 4WD would be recommended for access as frequently gets boggy in parts. Please follow established tracks as land is leased for grazing. Maimais constructed along length of lagoon.
EARTHQUAKE FLAT – access is through a Landcorp farm at the end of Earthquake Flat Road, off Corbett Road, Waikite Valley. Alternative access may be arranged with the farm manager off SH5 Rotorua – Taupo highway, approximately 1.5km South of Waimangu Road.

HARDCASTLES – access is via a Landcorp farm off Broadlands Road, 200m south of the Broadlands township. The access point is F&G sign posted. Drive through this gate and follow the Fish & Game logo signs to reserve boundary. Access is over a boat style only. Contact with the farm manager is compulsory prior to access permission granted, as a hazard acknowledgment form must be signed (Permission form). A boat is required to access all maimais. KAPENGA – situated at the end of Barber Road , off Bryce Road, which comes off SH30, Rotorua – Tokoroa road. Go down the hill past the driveway into the log house and enter via the gate at the end of the metal track. Travel along approximately 1.2km of clay track until mature pines are reached, at which point the balloted ponds should be visible off to the North East. Opportunity also exists throughout the lower reaches of this area for pheasant (or wallaby). View Kapenga Maimai Locations
NGAPOURI – situated off Waikite Valley Road. Access track is F&G sign posted. A boat is required for access to all maimais bar one. A boat ramp is available at the end of the access track and should shooting not be so good try trout fishing instead. Ngapouri Access Map
OROTU – situated off Campbell Road on SH5 Rotorua – Taupo, about 1 km North of the first Northern Reporoa turn off. Access point is approximately 1.2km along Campbell Road on the left-hand side (Northern) of the road. Look for a half round barn on a hill with a gate directly below (this is between both one lane bridges) and F&G sign posts. Drive through this gate and follow the fence line and Fish & Game logo signs to reserve boundary. Access is over a boat style and down the manuka corridor that appears as a water track. A canoe is required for access to all maimais. Contact with the farm manager is compulsory prior to access permission granted, as a hazard acknowledgment form must be signed (Permission Form).

RAWHITI – access is via a Landcorp farm off Ohaaki Bridge Road. The access point is F&G sign posted and on the South Western side (true right) of the Waikato River. Travel through the paddock to the edge of the lagoon where two alternative boat and person styles are located. Contact with the farm manager is compulsory prior to access permission granted, as a hazard acknowledgment form must be signed (Permission Form). A boat is required to access all maimais. TUTAEINGA – situated on Ngapouri Road, off Waikite Valley Road. Access to this small lake is via the gate just before the second house on the left on this road. Legal access is permitted around circumference of the lake, but respect normal farming practices.
WAEWAETUTUKI – Continue to the end of Kaikokopu Road and then along the embankment until you can go no further. Kaikokopu Road is 5.8km West along SH 2 from the Pukehina Beech Road turn-off. |
