Rotorua Lakes abuzz with summer action
The heat of summer has seen the Rotorua lakes fishing buzzing with action recently. Excellent trout fishing opportunities exist where trout are congregating to find cooler waters during the heat says Fish and Game officer Matt Osborne, “at this time of year, it’s really about finding a location rather then specific fish. The mouth of all the cold water streams and deep water provides the preferred habitat for trout during summer”

Excellent catches of trout are occurring around the region with Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti standing out. “The Awahou stream mouth is buzzing with fish during the evenings. The usual catch rate locally is a about a quarter of a fish per hour (1 fish for every 4 hours of fishing effort), but at present anglers are averaging 2 fish per hour and many are landing limit bags at stream mouths” Mr Osborne said.
Jigging, a method which enables anglers to target fish at very specific depths, is also producing great sport. Deeper lakes, Rotoiti, Tarawera and Okataina are all fishing well to the jig.
