Lake Aniwhenua & Rangitaiki River System Report

With the little rain we had recently the fish started moving into the tributary streams. Reports of Rainbows up to 7lb is really encouraging for this early in spawning season. The Browns usually enter first with the Rainbows following. If we continue to get small rainfalls from now on these streams will produce their best fishing over May & June. The main tributary streams comprise of the Horomanga River and the Waihua & Mangamako streams.

An important note is to remember that these streams remain open right through to the end of June. They do not close a month earlier like a lot of other streams.

Our main rivers such as the Rangitaiki and Whirinaki are still fishing good. The latter has been very low and shallow. This has spread the fish out all over, compared to being in the runs and pools. Some really decent sized fish are being caught in just centimetres of water so it pays not to disregard any section of the river.

Lake Aniwhenua continues producing good numbers of fish for the anglers prepared to put in the time. There’s a heap of young fish closer to the surface so fishing on the bottom is producing the bigger ones. We can already see the summer weed dissipating as the water temperature is starting to cool.

Cheers,
