Bay of Plenty Report

The last few months have produced some of the best flyfishing that I have seen for many years and we are still in full swing. All the rivers and lakes in "my " area are in pristine condition and the trout have responded accordingly.

Whilst I have'nt fished the rivers to the NNW of whakatane over this last summer I have information from very reliable sources telling me that the likes of the Rangitaikei and the Whirinaki have fished well all summer and of course with the sexy time fast approaching expect even better. I can tell you that the rivers around OPOTIKI and to the SE have are fishing beyond expectations as an example a 4 day guiding trip produced 71 fish to the bank with many more saying a very brief hello.

Several 1 day trips have produced equally as well. Fishing to sighted fish this summer has been the standout due to the clear water and relative low flows and the fish have been very sporting and have responded well to the dryfly especially a full blown cicada pattern. There have been some dramatic evening rises in the Waioeka and it's tributaries and these are the areas I have spent much of my time fishing whilst alone or with the dogs and the sighting of several reddeer has been a real bonus.

The Motu is fishing well throughout but particularly well closer to the origins of this river mind you the fish are a wee bit fidgety but by careful approach and good use of the stock tracks to stay below the skyline has to a greater extent illiminated this problem.

Our annual trip to the Ruatakuri did once again meet all expectations but I must say that this river has been subjected to heavy angler presence this summer but still produces the goods. Some rain is forcast for the Eastern BOP during the next couple of days ie 12th and 13 th April which will be most welcome and will indeed freshen everything up and lead to even more great fishing for the late summer.
