Bay of Plenty Report
Low water conditions prevail throughout my area of operation which contrary to popular believe has actually made the fishing success much easier to attain.
Fish have by and large congregated into the fast riffly water which of course is much cooler and more oxygenated thus making the fish's life a bit more bearable.
All the rivers are fishing well if the correct methods are used; as a general rule of thumb the smaller the flies the greater the take rate, in fact the fly size is far more important than the fly pattern within limits of course.
Cicadas are still appearing as are the lace moths; the latter will be with us for a while yet.
There have been a couple of occasions during the past few weeks when rain has fallen in any substantial amounts and the fishing has taken off big time but the long term forecast doesn't give much hope for more just yet.
Finally if you are on the river in the late afternoon you will probably encounter some astounding rises; be patient here and don't be afraid to do multiple fly changes to hit the right one. One afternoon just recently around 10 fly patterns were tried out before WHAMMO after which we buggered off home happy that we'd cracked it as they say.
