Eastern Rivers and Waikaremoana June 20th
By Murray Ferris
Well the drought has finally broken and as I write the Lake is filling, the rivers are dirty and rising and the temperature is plummeting. It just does not get better than that with your clothes on.
Things were getting out of hand with spawning not far off and some of the lake streams so low a fish would not get up them and some fish would not get out if they were up the river already.
Reports that the lake is as low as it has been for many, many years was not good news and it certainly is timely rain. The fishing in the local rivers has been quite good despite the low conditions but it was hard. The BOP rivers fared much better and were pretty much at normal autumn levels.
As the season grinds to a close on the 30th June we don't have a lot of time to enjoy the last of the winter fishing. However make an effort when the weather clears and do it, I personally think that the fish are better to catch now, they are certainly in as good a condition as they will ever be before they spawn and we will be hanging out for the opening on the 1st of October to see how things went over the closed season.
Don't relax on the didymo vigil - remember clean treat and dry.
