LAKE ANIWHENUA & RANGITAIKI RIVER SYSTEM

Well, happy new year everyone. Lets hope it’s going to be a good one.

At the time of writing this, we are just receiving some much needed rain. Not so much for the fishing but more for the arid parched land we have in the valley here. Water levels have been really low but this also has an advantage of concentrating the fish in the deeper or more oxygenated sections of water. River crossings are no problems and the heat is making the insects hatch like mad.

There is plenty of surface activity now and the cicadas can be heard chorusing all over. Getting some really great rises. The Whirinaki & Rangtiaiki rivers are producing some excellent fishing.

On a calm day on Lake Aniwhenua you’ll be amazed at the amount and size of the trout feeding above the weed beds and just below the surface. Their fins and tails are a dead give away breaking the water. Most are browns and you can get great satisfaction from targeting these fish.

The main channel area is perhaps one of the better areas for picking up those bigger ones on the bottom. Not much problem with weed here so a sinking line & short trace is usually the most successful.

Cheers,
Joan Ryder
