Lake Aniwhenua & Rangitaiki River System Report

The Waihua & Mangamako streams and the Whirinaki & Horomanga rivers have fished well this past month to fresh run spawners. These waters all close on 1st July and re-open for the new season on 1st October.

The Rangitaiki river, Whaeo river & canal, Flaxy lake and Lake Aniwhenua remain open all year. These waters provide good angling, no matter what time of the year you fish them. All respond well to both fly and spinners.

Today, even though we’re half way through June, is perhaps the first day that you realise winter is actually here. Although the sun is shining brilliantly there’s a cutting wind coming from the south. Word is that it’s already sleeting at Minginui and along the ranges. This sudden cold snap will not do the fishing any favours.

Looking ahead, August and September are excellent months for fishing Lake Aniwhenua in particular. This is when there’s the least amount of weed around the shore. The winter temperatures, and especially frosts, kill it off quite quickly. This is also when many of the Browns return from spawning and are cruising the shore line for easy food. Spotting and casting to individual fish is awesome and there’s generally plenty to be seen.

Cheers,
Joan Ryder
