LAKE ANIWHENUA & RANGITAIKI RIVER SYSTEM

There’s heaps of fish rising, playing and splashing through the lakes shallows. Using a floating line with nymphs or a woolly bugger and targeting these fish is greatly rewarding. Spin fishers that have stayed at the lodge recently have had some brilliant days out there. Veltic spinners have been the preference.
The lake is receiving a bit more attention this week as many of the overseas world fly fishing teams are practicing ready for the champs.

The Rangitaiki rivers improved greatly since the last rain. The fish sizing we’re catching has improved dramatically. The trout still seem to be inhabiting selected waters. The best fishing been in the real fast water so it’s pretty essential to use good weighted flies.

It seems the Whaeo canal has been producing good lately. There’s reports of heaps of fish which can be seen cruising the edges and rising. The canal is good for nymphing just as you’d do in the river. There’s good current flow and you can get a nice drift.

The Whirinaki river has responded well since the last rain. The fish have moved back into their normal lies. There seems to be a lot more fish in the riffley water with the added volume. Most noticed since the rain, is the amount of Browns. The rises during the day have also increased and generally there’s really good action.
