Lake Aniwhenua & Rangitaiki River System Report
Just a quick report as I’ve only just arrived back in the country.
At the time of writing the area is receiving quite a few inches of rain. This is much needed and I’m sure we’ll see plenty of fish up the tributary streams from now on. June is the prime month of the year for fishing the small streams such as the Waihua & Mangamako and the Horomanga river. These waters all provide fantastic nymphing for the spawning runs. All these waters then close at the end of June and re-open 1st October.
The Rangitaiki River, Lake Aniwhenua, Whaeo canal & Flaxy lake all remain open all year.
There is still some surface weed on Aniwhenua as the area has not received a single frost yet. Usually by this time of year the water temperature has dropped enough that the seasonal weed dies off and disappears.
Fishing is still going great with plenty of trout being landed. Best method - a small woolly bugger on a sinking line.
