LAKE ANIWHENUA & RANGITAIKI RIVER SYSTEM

The Horomamga river is still holding some good fish, although they’re more spread out. This is well worth giving a go.

The water levels of the Waihua & Mangamako are getting lower at present because of the lack of rain in the area. However, there are still fish to be had in these spawning streams. The water is so crystal clear that caution is needed whilst stalking these fish. On the lower reaches of the Waihua, the evening rises have been brilliant.

The Whirinaki river is generally holding good numbers of fish. Where there seems to be less fish in some areas the big sizing makes up for it. Reports from anglers of catching & releasing about 10 trout per angler per day.

The Rangitaiki river is quite often overlooked by anglers because of the bigger volume of water, but this in fact is probably our best fishery. Good numbers here also and a real mixture of sizing depending on where you’re fishing. Nymph fishing is the preferred method but as we move towards summer, with the longer hours, the dry fly fishing in the evening is not to be missed.

Lake Aniwhenua is a very good fishery. These shallow waters come alive from now on as the warmer water temperatures promote huge hatches of nymphs. It’s best fished when the suns on the water and throughout the day. It’s certainly not just a morning or evening fishery.

Cheers,
