Hawke’s Bay Fishing Report
From Grant Petherick
If you can overlook Easter trading hours and queues everywhere, April is a great month in Hawkes Bay.
For the past few years the weather has been settled and sunny and the rivers in great shape after a couples of freshes late March. This year has been no exception and although I have not had to wander far from the Tukituki to enjoy some great fishing, I hear most of the other streams in the district have also been fishing well.
What I have found on the Tuki, is that fish have vacated the shallow riffles and drop-offs they seem to favour in warmer months and are now holding slower water and even cruising the edges of long pools.
While it’s encouraging to see these fish, they are not always easy to fool and very small flies and very careful presentation are the required approach……even then, it is not unusual to see your intended quarry bolt for the far side of the river, spooking every other fish in the area . Entertaining, but frustrating at times.
Hopefully the forecast rain doesn’t come to much and anglers can continue to enjoy some late season sport on the count down to duck shooting.
