Hawke’s Bay Fishing Report
From Grant Petherick
The on again / off again summer weather that has been driving beach goers and campers crazy has actually been beneficial to the local rivers.
Although the overcast skies and frequent showers have made angling conditions trying at times, the nett effect has been to keep the middle / lower reaches of the main rivers fresh and relatively weed free. As late as mid month, there were still good numbers of trout in the Ngaruroro as far down as the Chesterhope Bridge. Good catches of fish have also been reported in the Tutaekuri round the Puketapu area. Earlier in February, rainbows and browns in the Tukituki started holding in backwaters as they often do at this time of year. However, a good dump of rain freshened up the system and fish are once again distributed through the main stem of the river. Its anyone’s guess as to how long these conditions prevail but it makes sense to exploit them while we can. The trout generally are in great condition, but are getting pretty “street wise”. Fine gear and small flies will pay dividends.
