Hawke’s Bay Fishing Report
From Grant Petherick
What has turned out to be a nightmare for the farmers in the district May / June, has been a great time for winemakers…..and fly fishermen in Hawkes Bay.
My mate Greg has been regularly popping down to the Ngaruroro not far from Hastings. Armed with dry / dropper, he has been landing 3 -4 nice fish on a regular basis for a couple of hours on the water.
Last week I managed to have a beginner land a 4 lb and 5 lb rainbow from the Tukituki for a mornings work. Both fish were in superb condition and took us well out into the backing. We lost a third fish of similar size, which all in all, would be a pretty fair result on the Tongariro at this time of year.
However, I do have to say, the low flow conditions were not helping fishing on the Mohaka and I had several reports from guys finding things pretty tough out there.
Fortunately for the farmers, the drought seems to have broken, and while all the major rivers are carrying colour, I think this fresh can only help the chances for good fishing locally, once the water clears.
