Hawke’s Bay Fishing Report

Last week I was anxiously watching river levels as many streams approached minimum flow levels. Torrential rain in the main ranges has changed all that.
At the time of writing ( Jan 14th), the Mohaka was a heaving mass of brown water, unlikely to be fishable for 4-5 days.
The Tutaekuri and Ngaruroro had both discoloured, but were not carrying the volume of water seen in the Mohaka. The Tukituki had also discoloured but it too should clear relatively quickly.
Smaller streams to the east of the ranges such as the Maraetotara, seem to have escaped the worst of the rain and have remained low and clear.
While posing an inconvenience to the visiting angler, the latest rain has come at an opportune time and should serve to freshen the main rivers.
The Tukituki has thus far remained free of floating weed and this and the Mohaka, when it clears, should provide good angling opportunities through January into February.
Generally, the fish in the district have become quite “educated” over the summer holiday period so a stealthy approach and fine gear will be the order of the day.
