Hawke’s Bay Fishing Report
From Grant Petherick
With the start of the winter season, options for anglers locally are now greatly reduced.
The Tukituki, Waipawa and Mohaka are clear but all are carrying a large volumes of water. The Tuki especially, and the Mohaka to a lesser extent, do not tend to fish well when they are full. Certainly the tactics that worked in the summer are , for the most part, inadequate to target fish in these heavier flows. Indeed, a sinking line and a good old rabbit fly or similar fished on the swing wouldn’t be a silly idea. The prevailing conditions should suit spin fishers as well.
The Ngaruroro is still quite coloured and rain forecast for the weekend ( 24 -25 May ) isn’t going to help the situation.
If the rivers do get blown out, there’s always Lake Tutira to fall back on… and the Waipunga below the falls can be worth a look if the rain is from an easterly direction…..but from the forecast, it looks like duck shooting is going to be a better option for the next little while.
