Hawke’s Bay Fishing Report
From Grant Petherick
With the start of the duck shooting season I guess many people are tempted to put away their fishing rods until next spring.
However, while the fine weather continues….or if you shoot as badly as I do, I think we are fortunate here in Hawkes Bay to have a number of rivers that remain open 12 months.
Although the mornings have a definite wintery chill about them, the main rivers are as low and as clear as I have seen them over the past 6 months. Low light conditions make spotting difficult at this time of year, but I have enjoyed some very good sport in the Tukituki and Mohaka recently using dry / dropper or fishing double nymphs on the swing in riffle water.
Fish numbers aren’t as abundant as they were a few weeks ago, or perhaps the low water conditions are making the trout a little more wary. Whatever the reason, the rainbows especially are in terrific condition and fight superbly well.
The best time to fish seems to be mid morning through to mid afternoon, which happily gives the opportunity for an evening shot for those who live close enough to duck habitat.
Overnight rain, ( May 21st ) in the ranges will likely “freshen up” the larger rivers and this will no doubt enhance fishing prospects for the rest of the month.
Good luck with rod or gun.
