Hawke’s Bay Fishing Report
From Grant Petherick
I have had several reports of excellent fishing to kick-start the season. Guys who seemed to do best, spent time and effort getting away from the crowds and fished smaller tributary streams.
Although the wind was howling opening day, anglers that managed to find sheltered places in deep gorges seemed to do very well.
The main rivers have been up and down like yo-yo’s and all through Labour Weekend, the Ngaruroro, Mohaka and Tukituki were all unfishable.
Previously, I had some excellent results on the Mohaka but the Tuki was a puzzle….I seemed to do better early Sept than I did later in Oct. even though the water looked great.
The main rivers are “ behind” where they usually are at this time of year and its anyone’s guess as to when they will settle.
With a bit of luck and a spell of fine weather, the Tuki should return to a reasonable level and bring on the afternoon hatch of mayflies that usually occurs at this time of year.
I am eagerly waiting for that to happen…..keep watching those forecasts !
