Hawke’s Bay Fishing Report

From Grant Petherick

The steady rain that has been falling overnight will no doubt be good for the garden, but isn’t really what we needed with the opening of the season just a few days away.

In Hawkes Bay we are fortunate to have fly fishing options 12 months of the year.
With the arrival of spring the lower Tukituki, Ngaruroro, and Tutaekuri usually start to fish well…assuming that is, they are clear enough for angling.

Certainly this year, the rivers have been slower to clear than in past seasons, but when water conditions have been right , there has been some great sport available.

These early season fish are plump, silvery, and scrappy and seem to lack the sophistication they will acquire as the season progresses.

A great deal of lip service is paid to these fish chasing whitebait in the lower reaches, and while this does no doubt occur, anglers should not ignore the opportunities nymph and even dry fly fishing can provide throughout the day.
The weather forecast looks promising for October 1st ,  so fingers crossed the rain does not amount to much as the main rivers certainly, are looking quite promising.
Tight lines.
