> Hunting News May 2009
Typically, Hawkes Bay opening weekend is known for its fine weather. This year the region experienced overcast conditions with cold southerly winds, and rain and drizzle which kept the seas rough preventing birds from rafting up on the water.
On Saturday, there were plenty of birds flying between places giving hunters the opportunity to pull in Mallard dabbling ducks. There were some good numbers of birds harvested despite the depressed population caused by 3 drought years. Fish & Game conducted compliance checks across the region using innovative technology such as aerial surveillance and satellite photography to achieve extensive coverage. There level of compliance was pleasingly high and there were no issues with hunting licences.
The warm, dry season has meant good breeding for upland game with a good number of pheasants. There are also a large number of Californian Quail frequenting Hawke Bay’s many kilometres of accessible riverbed.
Its also been a very good breeding season for Paradise Shelduck and there is a strong population throughout Hawkes Bay. Parries are becoming increasing popular amongst hunters as a hunting bird that decoys well and can be made into delicious sausages and salamis. Fish & Game Hawkes Bay has compiled a register of responsible, genuine hunters seeking to hunt Paradise Shelduck, and these hunters are being referred to farmers seeking assistance.
