For the 2007/2008 season, Fish & Game and Landcare Research are sponsoring an angler study which will investigate the impacts that changing fishery conditions (for better or for worse) have on anglers’ behaviour and the value of our trout fisheries in the Nelson-Marlborough region. As you may already be aware, many of Nelson Marlborough’s outstanding trout fisheries have come under threat from Didymo, hydro scheme proposals, increased angler pressure and environmental degradation, etc. This research aims to better understand these impacts, aid F&GNZ’s ability to manage the resource, and provide a body of evidence to be used to support the protection of our fisheries in future policy making.
Stephen Beville, a PhD candidate at Lincoln University, will be conducting the study using state of the art methods, which link sophisticated statistical modelling techniques with behavioural theory. In January of 2008 an internet survey will be issued to Nelson Marlborough anglers currently listed on FGNZ angler database. Anglers are encouraged to record their email addresses when purchasing their licence as in order to maximize the potential of this study angler support is imperative. If you are unsure that you are on the database, email the Nelson Fish and Game Office at admin@nmfgc.co.nz with your email address. Alternatively, for those without internet access, please contact Fish and Game (ph 03 544 6382) and a returned stamped hardcopy of the survey will be mailed to you during the survey period.
Your support is sincerely appreciated, and to those that complete the survey their names will be entered in a drawing to win either a choice of a $1000 gift voucher at Nelson Hamills Fishing and Hunting or a Sage Z-axis fly rod rod (your choice of model).
Be on the lookout for the upcoming survey and thanks for your support!
Stephen Beville
