Surplus hatchery trout windfall for winter anglers.
A flurry of recent trout liberations to reservoirs around Dunedin should provide a mid-winter fishing windfall for local anglers.
Fish & Game Otago hatchery manager Ian Hadland said that surplus stock of takable sized rainbows from the Macraes hatchery had recently been released at Sullivans Dam, Southern Reservoir and Tomahawk Lagoon. “The 2 year old stock needed to be liberated to make space for the yearlings which have been growing rapidly. That should be good news for anglers feeling the pinch with high travel costs” Mr Hadland said.
All three dams had received regular liberations over the spring and autumn leading to a more consistent catchrate. “Anglers have been reporting pretty good results with some real beauties being taken over the last couple of weeks”
Compliance has been very good at the reservoirs this season with no offences being detected. “Many people are opting to catch and release fish so they will never trouble the 1 fish per day bag limit and as long as they have a licence and don’t use bait, theres not much else to do wrong” Mr Hadland said
Fish & Game Ranger Steve Dixon releases another load of takable sized rainbows into Tomahawk Lagoon yesterday. More are on the way for Sullivans Dam and Southern Reservoir over the next week.
