Prospects for the Opening of the Season in Otago
Although Otago has had a long with long winter it has been free of damaging flood events but enough high water to clear out local rivers and streams. High country lake tributaries open on 1st November which is something to look forward to but there are plenty of inland rivers opening on 1st of October including the Taieri, Manuherikia, and Pomahaka. With a bit of settled weather between now and then the fishing should be excellent although they have been up and down in recent weeks.

Strong winds and rain have left some of the inland reservoirs discoloured but water levels have come up. Lakes Wanaka and Wakatipu are full but Lake Hawea is well down in level. Boat anglers in Central and the Lakes area usually appear in numbers over the school holidays with some fine weather. Lake Dunstan’s Clutha arm is always a safe bet
The Lower Clutha has been fishing well recently and should continue to do so with the whitebait running. South and west Otago waters have been a bit discoloured as well but should settle down for the opening. Coastal tributaries including the Shag and Waikouaiti are in good order but the Taieri is discoloured from recent rains at least in the lower catchment.
