Wanaka Fishing Report
From Richard Grimmett
Not a great deal for me to report on this month. It seems no time since the last one.
It is nearing the end of the season but there is still some excellent being had.
Dry fly fishing on the rivers and streams flowing into the lakes is not as rewarding now, fishing these with a streamer is the best option. The mouths of these proving the best at the moment with good quantities of fish in excellent condition. Fishing a streamer or whitebait pattern on a sinking line or leader is often productive.
These rivers are open until the end of May and quantities of fish will increase during the month with the browns getting ready to spawn.
Spin fishing at these river mouths has been a good option as has been trolling.
The edges of both Lake Wanaka and Hawea have until now provided some good dry fly fishing .
The weather has been excellent lately and the rivers and lakes have been in excellent condition.
The Clutha River is low and clear with good evening rises providing good fishing for the fly fisherman. It is dark much earlier now making it much more convenient to have a couple of hours fishing before tea or in some cases the cocktail hour.
Once again it is a good option for the spin fisherman to use a bubble with a wet fly in the evening.
Lately the Hawea River has been spilling too much water making fishing difficult.
