December Fishing Report from Wanaka

Richard Grimmett

November 1st saw the opening of the rivers flowing into Lakes Wanaka and Hawea and waters in being open. The conditions have been very difficult with wind and over the last 2 weeks plenty of rain making the rivers and streams full and colored. Snow melt from the mountains has also added to the problem.

For the fly fisherman who has been adaptable some excellent results have been achieved.

We are fortunate to have very good lake edge fishing which should not be underestimated and when these are fished with skill it is exciting and rewarding. Even on windy days it is possible to spot cruising trout and is a challenge to catch them. Dry flies are now on their menu and is my preferred method. Lake Hawea is rising and in good condition but Lake Wanaka is high and difficult to negotiate to walk in some places.

When the rivers are in good order dry flies are now successful with nymphs also a good option. On difficult days streamers are good value.

The Clutha River is running high but fishing well particularly in the evening and the Hawea at a good fishing level.

Spin fishing on the lakes has been reasonably successful and also on the Clutha River.

Trolling has been successful on both lakes with browns, rainbows and some nice salmon being caught. Traffic light Tasmanian devil or similar still appears to be the most successful.

With the Christmas holiday period approaching and many anglers on holiday in the area some settled weather will provide good fishing.

Tight Lines.

Richard Grimmett.
