Wanaka Fishing Report

From Richard Grimmett

I am sorry this report is brief but Wanaka has been very busy with some excellent fishing.

The week following my last report was much of the same with the rivers flowing into the lakes low and clear with some very wary trout. Wind also caused problems when dry fly fishing. Humpy and wulff patterns as usual were successful. When downstream winds made dry fly fishing impossible those who were adaptable and prepared to fish with streamers had some very productive fishing.

The rivers flowing out of the lakes were also very low with some excellent fishing. These were productive fished with a small dry such as a parachute adams or a small nymph.

Lake Wanaka was low and fishing great with a dry fly. When windy it is always possible to find a sheltered bay.
Lake Hawea was still quite high and fishing well with all methods.

Early March saw some wet and windy weather which raised the levels of the rivers and for those fishermen who were adaptable had great success with good size fish in excellent condition.

Fishing river mouths is now a good option for fly fishermen as well as spin fishing.

Boat trolling is also proving really rewarding in these areas.

Once again sorry that this report is brief and more from me next time
