Wanaka Fishing Report
From Richard Grimmett
This month my report will be very brief as the season closed on some rivers at the end of April. The balance close at the end of May with a small number being open all year.
The Lakes Wanaka and Hawea are also open.
For the fly fisherman the most popular areas have been the mouths of rivers flowing into the lakes using a streamer or nymph. Dry fly fishing is finished. These rivers have also been low and clear and fishing well.
Browns are now moving into these to spawn and at this time are easily spotted in large numbers which is a good sign.
Spin fishermen and boat trolling is still successful and best also at river mouths.
Evening fishing on the Clutha River is a good option for the fly fisherman and as it is dark early now it is possible to fish the rise and be home for tea.
The weather has been excellent with frosts and clear sunny days. The last few days were not so good with snow to low levels but the rivers are still low and clear. The weather forecast for the last few day of May is for more frosts and clear days.
Sorry this is such a brief report but not much happening just now.
Tight Lines
