Fishing News index> March 2007

Recent rainfalls have freshened up the rivers nicely and all now are flowing at ideal levels for fishing. The Mataura, especially in the lower reaches, should be good over Easter. Anglers are still required to obtain a Fiordland Rivers Licence and a clean gear certificate to fish in the tributaries of the lakes that are in Fiordland National Park. The Eglinton and Upukerora are excluded but others such as the Worsley, Glaisnock and Clinton do need a special permit. These can be obtained from the Southland Fish and Game website at: http://www.fishandgame.org.nz/SITE_Default/SITE_your_region/SITE_Southland/Southland.asp#fcl

Didymo still hasn’t been found in these rivers although it does occur on some lake shore sites in both lakes Te Anau and Manapouri. Because of this it is most important to have clean gear and to be careful about getting to these rivers as well.

Anglers are still required to clean their gear and boots between rivers. And remember felt soled waders are difficult to clean so avoid using these but if you must, clean them in hot water (too hot to touch) for at least 30 minutes between rivers.

The Oreti River Conservation Order hearing is set to reconvene in late April. In late January and February the Panel heard evidence from Fish and Game and supporters of the application. Evidence from 14 expert witnesses was heard. Supporters including anglers, Forest and Bird, Otago Fish and Game and Ngai Tahu also gave evidence in support. A strong case was made for the river’s outstanding trout fishery, probably the most accessible trophy brown trout fishery in the country, and the third most heavily used trout river we have. It is also highly regarded internationally for its big trout, clear water, and sight fishing opportunities.

Fish and Game is seeking a no damming provision throughout the river, and water quality and quantity restrictions on the river upstream of Mossburn where the fishing for large trout is most popular. It is relying on the provisions of the Regional Council’s water plan to protect the river in its mid and lower reaches. The Hearings Panel has asked that the objectors to the application be heard after the regional water plan decisions on water quality and quantity are published. This is to establish whether or not the plan would provide enough protection for the upper reaches as well. The water plan decisions are due to be released on the 28th of March.
