Fishing in Fiordland

Mike Molineux

With Lake levels now at a good level for fly fishing, and the wonderful weather we have been experiencing and looking to continue, we have been enjoying some great days out.

The sizes of fish caught in this region continue to be of good sizes, in fact sizes caught have been the best seen in this area for a number of years, and have provided great entertainment.

Rivers have been looking clear of didymo in a number of area's, though there are still patches choking parts of the rivers in the Upper Mararoa and upper Waiau river.

We have noticed a growing number of novice fly fishermen this season, perservereing in learning the art of casting, which is instrumental in accomplishing first. One such novice had given up any such thought of catching a fish as his focus had been on the very art of his casting, which he had been practising for many months.

In this particular instance it was just a matter of teaching him to hold his wrist still, and to concentrate on not bending it, this change in his action was all that was required for him to master his action. And yes, the difference brought the reward of catching his first fish, much to his great surprise!

Sometimes it can be just a small matter with our action or the setting of the rod, that makes all the difference in mastering the art of fly fishing, and do recommend that if you feel you haven't quite got it, to seek out an experienced guide / fly fishermen to check your action and gear.

Have a great month ahead

Regards Mike
