Trout Fishing Report for Fiordland with Mike from Adventure Manapouri

Mike Molineux

Regular readers may notice a business name change. Until the 31st of march 2006 I operated my fishing business under the name Fish Fiordland. As I sold my 10.1 metre boat providing water taxi access on the lake, I now continue my fishing business under the trading name of 'Adventure Manapouri' as well as continuing in providing access across the Waiau river to the Manapouri track and guided walks.

This season is shaping up to be an exciting time with the arrival of my new 5.7m boat 'The Mayfly' built by Aqualite in Timaru. Not only was it love at first sight, she is everything a man could want, built to specifications of being fit for geriatrics, the pontoons make it stable for walking around the deck and ideal for fishing from, but the extra wide walkways and railings make her a pleasure, not to forget the telescopic ladders front and back for access to sandy beaches. She rides smoothly and softly, cutting through the water with ease. Being tailorable, access to the many lakes and rivers in Fiordland will provide many new opportunities for exploring and accessing various areas around the variety of lakes both by myself and for clients.

At present Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau are high with very little beach access to the waters edge, though a good number of large fish have come into the lakes with the swollen rivers and are providing good spin fishing.

A fishing competition held over Labour weekend on Lake Te Anau produced a 1.6kg Rainbow Trout, which is quite a nice size.

Until next month, wishing you all good weather and great fishing

Regards Mike Molineux
