Manager/Senior Field Officer WANGANUI
Taranaki Fish & Game Council is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual for its Manager/Senior Field Officer position based in Wanganui. The position is divided more or less equally into three areas of responsibility, being managerial, resource management advocacy and fish and gamebird population management. Managerial responsibilities include the development and implementation of strategic and operational plans, advocacy, budgeting and reporting to the Council. The position also involves a significant operational component.
The successful applicant must demonstrate:
- Leadership and management ability
- External relationship building skills
- Communication skills and reporting ability
- Ability to manage and work with a team of 2 staff
- A working knowledge of the Conservation, Wildlife & Resource Management Acts
- A good level of physical fitness and swimming ability
- An interest in angling and/or hunting

Job Description: Manager/Senior Field Officer
The Taranaki Fish & Game Council is an autonomous statutory body with responsibility for the management of fresh water sports fish and game bird resources within the Taranaki Fish & Game Region on behalf of anglers and hunters.
The Taranaki Fish & Game Region comprises an area of the western North Island, including Taranaki province, Wanganui and the Waimarino district near Mt. Ruapehu. Most of the region’s trout fisheries have their source within Egmont or Tongariro National Parks and they include more than 40 small stream fisheries on the Taranaki ringplain and the nationally important Manganui-o-te-ao River located near Raetihi. Good numbers of gamebirds are present on lakes, rivers and wetlands scattered throughout the region, with the principal species being Mallard duck and Paradise shelduck.
The region has an annual operating budget of approximately $237,000 and is serviced by a staff of three, with a Secretary and Manager/Senior Field Officer based in the Council’s main office in Wanganui and a Field Officer based in New Plymouth.
While ultimate responsibility rests with the elected Council members, the effective management of the region is largely delegated to the Manager and staff who are afforded considerable flexibility and initiative under the Council’s governance model to achieve the objectives set by the Council.
Key responsibilities of the Manager/Senior Field Officer are:
Management
- General management oversight, including advising the Council on strategic directions;
- Lead the staff in preparing and implementing an annual operational work plan, budget and annual report;
- Attend F&G Managers meetings, advocate the interests of the Council and contribute to the development and implementation of national policy;
- Review the Council’s Sports Fish and Game Management Plan, which expires in 2010;
- Report annually on the extent to which the Council’s governance policies have been met.
Resource Management Act
- Represent the interests of anglers and hunters in the statutory planning process by making submissions on regional and district plans and resource consent applications for activities in that part of the Taranaki Fish & Game Region falling within the Horizons Regional Council and Wanganui and Raupehu District Council boundaries.
Fish and Gamebird Population Management
- Help develop and implement methods to assess and monitor sports fish and gamebird populations in the Taranaki Fish & Game Region;
- Monitor gamebird population trends in the Wanganui and Waimarino districts using aerial and ground counts as necessary;
- Monitor trends in trout populations in the Waimarino and Taranaki ringplain areas using drift dive monitoring, electric fishing and trout spawning surveys as necessary;
- Respond to requests for the disturbance or control of gamebirds causing damage in the Wanganui and Waimarino areas.
Other Activities
- Help with recruitment and training of the region’s voluntary Rangers and undertake compliance checks of anglers and hunters;
- Help negotiate and prepare angler and hunter access information pamphlets;
- Develop a regional public awareness strategy and help prepare F&G publicity material for magazine, newsletter and newspaper articles;
- Develop a regional marketing plan;
Establish Memoranda of Understanding with Iwi Authorities.

- An interest in hunting and freshwater fishing;
- An understanding of environmental principles and issues of relevance to Fish & Game;
- An understanding of the principles of governance by an elected Council.
