GO FOR GREEN

Fish & Game NZ – Wellington Region is advocating to actively target drakes over hens this season.  The Go for Green catch cry translates as go for drakes.  It is one way to avoid increasing the complexity of regulations.  You might spend an extra hour in the maimai getting your limit, but you will feel good about doing your bit to conserve the brood stock for next year.

Conserving hens is one of the best ways to maintain the base population when environmental conditions are tough.  Each hen that makes it through the game season has the opportunity to nest and produce offspring.  This keeps the base population recruitment healthy, which translates into more juveniles and more birds next year.

It’s a good thing to keep in mind when a flock of birds comes over, that if you can make a choice, go for the drakes and be easy on the hens…
