GREAT FISHING CONTINUES - MANAWATU AND RANGITIKEI RIVERS

Manawatu River – While some rain has come to the Manawatu, it has been in modest amounts, with the river flows being relatively stable. The Manawatu River above the gorge has continued to fish exceptionally well with nymphs, and dry flies. High numbers of fish of relatively large size have been taken and are providing great fishing for the experienced and novice angler alike. Good sized brown trout have been landed within the city boundaries of Palmerston North – not a long way to travel for many local residents. Sometimes the best fish are to be found at your feet!

Rangitikei River – the mid Rangitikei has been fishing well all season. Heavy rainfall in the upper catchment recently has moved some of the fish from the runs but it will still be productive with spinning and fly gear.

Hutt River – The stable low flow conditions have meant the fish have remained in their normal haunts and have provided good fishing opportunities. You must be prepared to put in the time and effort however as the catch rate isn’t high in every stretch of river.

Wairarapa – the mid and lower Ruamahanga has had large areas modified by flood control operations with some access to fishable pools being reduced. Recent rainfall events has however increased river levels which has provided good fishing - if the fish can be located.

Other rivers in the Wairarapa have been under late summer low flow conditions but drift dive surveys have indicated numbers within the normal expectation. Anglers using very small nymph patterns have been getting success in the back waters of the lower stretches of streams off the Eastern Tararuas but it has been difficult fishing.

Kapiti Coast Rivers - River flows since the end of March have increased in the Waikanae, Ohau, and Otaki rivers – with moderate trout numbers lending themselves for sighted fishing opportunities. Great access and consistent fishing downstream of State Highway 1 with good evening rises still present.

Contact the Wellington Fish & Game office (06) 359 0409 for our excellent access pamphlets on these rivers.

Congratulations to the NZ Fly Fishing Team that recently gained second place at the World Championships. Local anglers – Paul Dewar (captain) [Levin], Des Armstrong [Palmerston North], and Aaron West [formerly of Palmerston North] were to the fore. The rivers of the Manawatu and Wairarapa providing great opportunities for these anglers to perfect their skills.
