GREAT FISHING CONTINUES -  MANAWATU AND RANGITIKEI RIVERS

Manawatu River – has continued to fish exceptionally well with nymphs, and drys,  even in the most popular access points.  High numbers of fish of relatively large size have been taken and are providing great fishing for the experienced and novice angler alike.

Rangitikei River – the mid Rangitikei has been fishing well all season – and this continues with high numbers of fish, concentrated in the runs.  Fly and spinning gear are likely to be very productive.

Hutt River – The stable low flow conditions have meant the fish have remained in their normal haunts and have provided good fishing opportunities - although catch rate isn’t  high in every stretch of river.

Wairarapa – the Ruamahanga has been patchy with fish found mainly in pools during low flow.  The cicada hatch in late February/early March has however provided excellent opportunities using cicada flies providing excellent success opportunities if the fish can be located.

Other rivers in the Wairarapa have been under very low summer low flow conditions but drift dive surveys have indicated numbers within the normal expectation.  The Eastern Tararua streams have continued to produce good fish in the headwaters using small dries – mayfly hatches have been prolific as the temperatures warmed up in mid summer.  Anglers using very small nymph patterns have been getting success in the back waters of the lower stretches but it has been difficult fishing.

Kapiti Coast Rivers -  The Waikanae, Ohau, and Otaki rivers have also had low flows – with moderate trout numbers lending themselves for sighted fishing opportunities.  Great access and consistent fishing  downstream of State Highway 1 with good evening rises.

Contact the Wellington Fish & Game office (06) 359 0409 for our excellent access pamphlets on these rivers.
