Hunters ready to descend on ‘coast

If recent hunter surveys by Fish & Game are anything to go by the west coast can expect an influx of hunters for the ‘Special Open Season’ on Paradise Shelduck and Pukeko in March.

Hunter surveys have shown that, in recent years, up to a quarter of the gamebird hunting on the west coast is by hunters who have bought their licence in another region. Fish & Game officer Dean Kelly commented that “With our relatively low number of resident hunters, and an abundance of wetland habitat, the waterfowl hunting on the West Coast is some of the best in the country. When you combine this with hunters in other regions facing increased competition for access to what wetlands are left it is not surprising they are attracted here.  Paradise Shelduck respond well to decoying and can be hunted at any time of the day. These attributes make them a highly attractive option for visiting hunters.”

The West Coast Fish & Game council has announced a summer season for Paradise Shelduck and Pukeko running from 1st –30th March in response to requests by hunters, and to manage increasing bird numbers as a result of improved pasture coastwide. They advise that 2007/8 gamebird hunting licences and regulations are valid and remind all hunters to seek permission before entering private property.
