Many of North Canterbury’s high country lakes offer rewarding opportunities for game bird hunting, particularly for those willing to venture off the beaten path.
While some lakes can be hunted without landowner permission, it is strongly recommended that you contact the local farmer or landholder first. Not only is it a sign of respect, but it often leads to better access, local knowledge, and long-term goodwill.
These remote, scenic areas can provide excellent duck shooting, especially early in the season when birds haven’t been heavily pressured. Lakes with surrounding tussock and wetland edges can attract mallards, paradise shelduck, and even the occasional shoveler, especially during stormy or unsettled weather.
Please note:
Lake Grasmere and Lake Pearson are designated wildlife refuges, and all hunting is strictly prohibited.
Always check signage and local regulations before heading out.
