Braided rivers are all down the North Canterbury Region and offer great hunting opportunities.

The Rakaia, Waimakariri, Hurunui, and Waiau Rivers offer some of the most scenic and productive game bird hunting in North Canterbury. Their vast braided riverbeds, quiet springs, and tidal lagoons provide diverse and exciting opportunities for hunters of all levels.

Prime Hunting Habitats

  • Tidal Lagoons: These expansive, still-water areas near the river mouths are magnets for mallards, paradise shelducks, and Canada geese, especially on windy days. Birds often gather in large numbers, offering great pass-shooting opportunities.

  • Upper Reaches and Backwaters: Further inland, hunters can set up in open water spots or along quiet springs and side channels. These areas are ideal for traditional decoy setups and provide a more peaceful, wilderness-style hunting experience.

  • Flush Shooting: For those who like to keep moving, the braided margins are dotted with small springs, ponds, and backwaters. These are great for flush shooting ducks, particularly when birds are moving between feeding and roosting areas.

Access and Freedom to Roam

  • Most of the braided riverbeds are accessible to licensed hunters, offering freedom to explore wide open landscapes and find your own ideal spot.

  • While some areas near towns may have shooting restrictions, vast stretches remain open to game bird hunting, and signage will make any limitations clear.

Watch for Your Dogs

  • Be aware that rabbit control using 1080 poison may take place in some riverbeds. These areas are well signposted, and while not a risk to humans or game meat, they pose a danger to dogs.

  • To keep your canine hunting partner safe, avoid any marked areas until the following spring.
