The lower Taieri River may be drift-shooted between Outram and Allanton. Launch a small rowboat, canoe or kayak at Outram bridge and drift down to Murray Road or to Allanton.
The river is best drifted on higher-than-normal levels. Use the edges to your advantage as a stealthy approach is needed. Ducks will often fly off well ahead or hide among willows and wait for you to pass before bursting out.
It is advisable not to drift-hunt early in the season to avoid disrupting hunters on riverside stands. Be aware of your obligations under the Firearms Act, and respect private property. The utmost care must be taken when navigating the river and discharging firearms.
