Like most Otago coastal lakes and rivers, the 220ha Lake Waipori has highly productive waterfowl habitat. Most permanent maimais are fully occupied on opening weekend but there are always vacant maimais later in the season. The lake is tidal and shallow, and hunts best in windy conditions.

Access is by small boat from below the Waipori pumping station. The pumping station is off Henley-Berwick Rd, about 2km west of State Highway 1. Turn south onto the pumping station track at the canal bridge and follow next to the canal for 900 metres.

Alternatively, there is small-boat access from the Henley-Berwick Rd bridge at the confluence of Waipori River and the Contour Channel. Parking at the bridge is limited. Follow Waipori River downstream into the northern end of the lake.

Other hunters launch from the Taieri Ferry Rd boat ramp at Henley, and follow Waipori River upstream into the southern end of Lake Waipori. The outlet of the lake is particularly shallow.
