Know the game, know the gun - different game and different hunting styles require different arms and ammunition.

Additionally, you'll want to include supplementary gear like covers, camo and calls to up your chances of a smooth and succesful hunt. 

Selecting your shotgun

Most moderately priced shotguns will last a lifetime if well looked after. The most common shotgun calibre is 12 gauge (and 12 gauge ammunition in less expensive than other gauge ammo).


The range of 12 gauge ammunition can be bewildering for a new hunter. We’ll cover the basics here but suggest you discuss any queries with an experienced hunter or your hunting retailer, or contact your regional Fish & Game office.
