Northland has had a great start to the season, the rivers seem to have recovered from the extreme weather events over the last year.

River levels are low for this time of year and water clarity is improving making for some good fishing conditions.

Water temperatures are low and most of the weed that was present last summer has now been washed away.

Liberations in Northlands Stocked Reservoirs

We completed our liberations last month and have slightly increased the stocking rates in our three main reservoirs.

Fishing pressure has increased and it’s good to see this resource being utilised.

We have released a mix of browns and rainbows in Whau Valley and Wilsons and solely rainbows at Lake Manuwai.

All authorised tackle is able to be used so this provides an opportunity for a wide range of skills and techniques to be utilised. Most methods work well and are productive.

The dams have filled up and the water has cleared from the major rain event in the winter.

Fishers are reporting good size fish feeding around the edges.

Kerikeri Rivers

The small rivers and streams around Kerikeri provide some easily accessible trout fishing right on Kerikeri’s doorstep.

The waterways hold small populations of rainbows.

We are in the process of updating our access and information brochures.
