The Waiau Uwha River offers a peaceful and rewarding fishing experience, far from the crowds often found on Canterbury’s larger braided rivers. Flowing through a series of striking hill country landscapes, this river is home to some of North Canterbury’s healthiest populations of brown trout, as well as seasonal runs of sea-run salmon.
With its mix of clear water, remote stretches, and scenic beauty, the Waiau Uwha is a favourite for anglers seeking both solitude and the thrill of quality wild fish. While access can be challenging in some areas due to steep terrain, those willing to explore are often well rewarded.
The Waiau Uwha River is located approximately 130 kilometres north of Christchurch, making it an accessible day trip or a perfect weekend destination.
Lower Reaches: Easily accessed from side roads off State Highway 1.
Middle Reaches: A number of bridges along the river provide key access points—these are particularly useful for anglers targeting the central sections.
Upper Reaches: Accessed via State Highway 7 (the Lewis Pass Highway), where the river enters more remote backcountry territory.
This variety of access points makes the Waiau Uwha suitable for all kinds of fishing adventures—from casual roadside stops to more rugged, off-the-beaten-path excursions.
From its alpine origins to the Pacific coast, the Waiau Uwha River flows through a spectacular series of gorges, offering both breathtaking scenery and exceptional angling opportunities. While access can be challenging in places, the reward is some of the most scenic and untapped fishing in Canterbury.
The Rivermouth
The Waiau Uwha Rivermouth is a salmon fishing location, best accessed by launching a jet boat at Spotswood and heading downstream—approximately a 10-minute ride. This spot fishes best during the middle stages of the incoming tide, when salmon are most active. Due to shallow and often rough conditions, surfcasting directly at the mouth is typically ineffective.
Middle Reaches
The middle sections of the river provide consistent action for both salmon and trout, particularly where access allows. Top access points include:
State Highway 1 Bridge
Waiau Township Bridge
Leslie Hills Bridge
Hanmer River Confluence
These locations offer a mix of productive water and easier riverbank access.
Spin fishing remains the most effective method for targeting salmon throughout the Waiau Uwha River.
At the Rivermouth:
Use a medium-fast action rod (2–2.5 metres) with a fixed or free spool reel holding at least 200 metres of 8–10kg line.
Upriver Fishing:
In clearer and shallower conditions, scale down to a lighter setup with 6–7kg line. Focus on slow, deep water near rocky outcrops or bluffs—ideal holding spots for salmon.
Top Lures:
Zed spinners (10–22 grams) are the most commonly used and must be fished right on the bottom to be effective.
Fly fishing for salmon is also a viable option here. Use streamer flies with sinking lines, targeting the tails of pools and slower stretches.
⚠️ Note: The upper limit for sea-run salmon fishing in the Waiau Uwha River is the Hope River Confluence. Always consult the latest regulations before fishing.
Both fly and spin/soft bait techniques work well for targeting brown trout in the Waiau Uwha River.
Spinning:
Best used when the river is discoloured. Sinking lures such as Tasmanian Devils or Tobys perform well in calm water near pool heads.
Fly Fishing:
Fly fishing excels in low, clear conditions. Trout are often visible, allowing for precise sight fishing. Popular methods include:
Weighted nymphs or dry flies fished upstream on a floating line
Tungsten beadhead nymphs for fast sink rates in pocket water
Headwaters & Tributaries:
In these remote sections, trout are cautious and require a stealthy approach. Stand well back, locate the fish, and present your fly with care. Blind fishing can still produce results, especially in the North Branch and other gorge areas.
Before fishing the Waiau Uwha River, please ensure you’re properly licensed and up to date with local rules:
A sports fishing licence is required for all trout fishing.
A sea-run salmon licence is required if targeting salmon within the river or within 500 metres of the river mouth.
Always refer to the latest Regulation Guide for season dates, bag limits, and access restrictions.
