On the Fly Mataura River Festival

Good fun at the On the Fly Mataura River Festival with Otago Fish and Game Council supporting Southland Fish & Game at this event. The juvenile rainbow trout on display were reared at Macraes hatchery in Otago and have been released into ponds in Southland. And the Backyard Bass casting game was a hit!

Attendance seems to be continually growing and we had a steady stream visit our tent.

We had juvenile trout on display. For those wanting to know how many fish were in the small tank - Roger Gibbs of Dunedin, guessed the correct answer of 73.

Staff ran the 'Kids Have a Go' casting session. Much fun was had as they tried to catch and reel in the 'fish'. Getting kids casting within a few minutes' shows just how accessible and family-friendly fishing is.
