Wonderful Winter Fishing Opportunities Ahead

As the main fishing season draws to a close, winter presents a quieter but rewarding chapter for anglers in the Wellington Fish & Game region.

Following an excellent main season, marked by good, cool water temperatures, and abundant food, fish across the region are entering winter in prime condition. Well-conditioned brown and rainbow trout offer genuine opportunities for those willing to adjust their approach.

Winter fishing is largely about understanding fish behaviour. As water temperatures drop, trout reduce their energy expenditure and tend to hold in slower, deeper water where they can feed efficiently. Pools, tail-outs, and soft edges below riffles become key areas, particularly on rivers such as the Ruamahanga, Hutt, and Rangitīkei.

The best time to be out on the water in the lower North Island over winter is in the middle of the day, when the sun is at its highest, and there is heightened insect activity.

Nymphing remains an effective technique through, with higher flows allowing anglers to use larger weighted natural patterns, and even egg-imitations.

Anglers can also go up a gauge in leader, and fish are less likely to be phased by larger indicators than in low, clear summer flows.

For fly anglers, winter also offers excellent streamer fishing opportunities. Trout often respond aggressively to larger mouthfuls when feeding windows are short.

Woolly buggers, rabbit-pattern streamers, and dark flashy flies swung or stripped slowly through deeper runs can trigger instinctive strikes, especially on overcast days.

Spin anglers are well served too. Soft-baits, small minnow-style lures, and lightly weighted spinners retrieved slowly near the bottom can be highly effective. The key is to slow everything down and maintain close contact with your lure.

Winter conditions demand preparation: wading safety, warm gear, and careful fish handling are essential.

However, reduced angling pressure, stunning seasonal scenery, and fish in outstanding condition make winter an underrated and rewarding time to fish the Wellington region.

For those prepared to brave the colder climes, the prospects are excellent.
